Choosing the right toughened glass for Kerala's coastal climate

Kerala's coastline is one of the harshest environments in India for architectural glass. Salt-laden air, ten weeks of driven monsoon rain, and year-round humidity above 80% will find every shortcut in a specification.

01 — The test bench nobody designs for

Most facade failures we're called to inspect share a pattern: the glass was specified for wind load and nothing else. Coastal Kerala adds three stresses that rarely appear on a schedule — salt crystallisation at fittings, thermal shock from monsoon rain on sun-heated lites, and edge corrosion where sealant met a poorly polished edge.

Each is preventable at specification time. None is fixable after installation.

"The monsoon doesn't test the glass. It tests the edge, the fitting, and the certificate."

02 — Thickness is not strength

A 12 mm annealed lite is weaker than an 8 mm toughened one in almost every load case that matters here. What thickness buys is stiffness — deflection control on large spans. What toughening buys is survival: four to five times the impact resistance, and a break pattern of blunt granules instead of shards.

Our rule for coastal balustrades: 12 mm toughened minimum, laminated where post-breakage retention matters — which, above the ground floor, is everywhere.

03 — The heat-soak question

Nickel-sulphide inclusions cause spontaneous breakage in a small fraction of toughened glass — typically in the first two years, typically on the hottest elevation. Heat-soak testing (EN 14179) destroys the vulnerable lites in the furnace instead of on your facade.

It adds cost and two days. On a coastal high-rise, we consider it non-negotiable — and we put that in writing on every quotation, so the value engineering conversation happens before the furnace, not after the call-back.
