Where it must hold
Thermal and acousticToughened covers most residential balustrades; laminated is asked for where glass must stay in place after breaking.
Neither toughened nor an insulated unit can be cut once made. Confirm sizes before the order goes to the plant.
Only the insulated unit addresses either. A single pane, tinted or not, will not.
General joinery
Wet areas
Moisture immuneIf it is a kitchen sink run or a bathroom, marine ply or multiwood. Standard ply belongs in dry rooms.
Ply holds hardware better. On a tall wet-area shutter, marine ply is usually the compromise.
Mixing grades room by room is normal, and the estimator will price it either way.
Hardest wearing
Real timber
Outside useLaminate repeats exactly. Veneer will not — which is the point of it, and the risk.
Laminate for the working faces, veneer where the room is seen. Most kitchens use both.
Only the cladding. Interior laminate and veneer will fail outdoors.
